Buyer preparation

Write a better data acquisition brief

A local specification template for buyers planning responsible data acquisition.

Sources and guidance · Reviewed October 2026

Describe the task before the dataset

State the model capability or evaluation problem, target domain, acceptable modalities, languages, coverage and exclusions. Define what success looks like and how a sample will be evaluated.

Make rights requirements explicit

Specify permitted use, required ownership evidence, privacy safeguards, onward sharing, duration and any exclusivity. Identify unacceptable sources and sensitive categories. Explain how suppliers should demonstrate compliance without disclosing confidential contracts prematurely.

Agree operational requirements

List formats, schemas, volume measurement, delivery channels, quality thresholds, versioning, acceptance tests and timelines. State which fields are mandatory and which can be negotiated.

Prepare a realistic commercial conversation

Describe the budget process and evaluation milestones without promising a purchase. Identify who approves a contract and who handles security and legal diligence. Use the datasheet builder to prepare your own specification; this site does not collect or distribute acquisition requests.

Use this as a preparation framework. It is not legal advice, a valuation or a promise that a buyer will accept your data.
