Specify what financial data means
The label can refer to invoices, accounting entries, forecasts, public filings, market prices, receipts, expense claims, or personal financial records. These are not interchangeable. Define the collection by business process and intended task, such as invoice extraction, reconciliation, or forecast-error analysis.
Start with material whose ownership and sharing basis can be reviewed clearly. Avoid treating sensitive account-level information as a convenient source of realism. If a task can be demonstrated with properly transformed corporate records, investigate that option before considering individual financial details.
Map source restrictions and confidentiality
Check whether records include third-party market feeds, credit reports, bank exports, partner pricing, or client information. Your organization’s ability to view a feed or statement does not establish a right to sublicense it. Record the original provider and governing agreement for each component.
Have privacy, contractual, sector-specific, and cross-border issues reviewed by appropriate specialists. Separate the company’s operational figures from employee or customer financial details. Do not include account credentials, payment-card information, tax identifiers, or unrestricted banking documents in a sales sample.
Preserve accounting meaning
A useful finance dataset needs definitions: currency, units, reporting period, accounting basis, revision status, and treatment of missing values. A negative amount could represent a credit, reversal, refund, or data error. Preserve the contextual fields needed to tell those cases apart.
For forecasting examples, freeze the information available at the forecast date. Later restatements and realized results should be labeled separately so the buyer does not accidentally evaluate with future knowledge. If the archive combines subsidiaries or acquired companies, explain changes in chart-of-accounts mappings and reporting conventions.
- Separate actuals, estimates, budgets, and forecasts.
- Document currency conversions and rounding.
- Keep reconciliation links and correction history where authorized.
Test a narrow use case first
A pilot for invoice extraction might evaluate document readability, field coverage, and checked labels. A reconciliation pilot may require linked records and explicit matching criteria. Match the commercial unit to that task rather than offering an unexplained number of rows.
Provide a cleared sample with original-value restrictions and documented transformations. Ask the buyer to justify any request for additional sensitive fields. Price manual validation and ongoing updates separately. The most important first decision may be whether a subset can be shared responsibly at all, rather than what the full archive might be worth.
Common questions
Are public financial filings unrestricted?
Public availability alone does not establish unrestricted reuse of every included component. Review the source, applicable rights, and any separate provider terms.
Can redacted invoices remain useful?
Yes for some tasks, if layout and required field relationships remain intact. Validate the transformed sample against the buyer’s actual task before expanding it.
